A change...

In the last week, I have decided to give up my main vice in life...Pepsi.  I've been a soda drinker for most of my life, but it really turned into an addiction when I hit jr. high and especially high school.  I had been drinking a lot of soda by then anyway, but when I discovered the one-liter bottle in my sophomore year, that was it.

Between my lack of exercise and drinking a ton of Pepsi, I have a beerbelly that sticks out like a sore thumb.  And so, I've decided that I have to try and give it up.  I've already stopped drinking it at work; previously I would stop at the local AM-PM near the casino and buy a one-liter bottle, and when it ran out, buy a 20 oz. from the gift shop at work.  This last week I bought two one-liter bottles of water instead, not only starting the process of de-tox, as it were, but saving me a bunch of money (one-liters of Pepsi are just over $2, and 20 ouncers are $1.50 at work; one-liters of water are TWO for $2 at the AM-PM).

I still have half a 12-pack of cans of Pepsi at home and I'll probably drink through it, but after that, I'm gonna try and give it up completely.  All I need to do now is get my ass back to the gym and try and work off some of this tub of shit glued to my midsection.

God knows I have a lot of personal issues to punch out on the bag these days.

Joe,

I tried doing just what you're doing, both for economic and health reasons. I was good for about 3 months but I've jumped back on the Pepsi wagon recently. In the first 3 weeks, I went through many sleepless nights, which made me less attentive at work and also affected my overall emotional and physical well-being. My blood pressure was at ungodly high levels, around 192/140. For the past 3 months, I've been on Norvasc (blood pressure meds) and have attempted to limit my soda drinking. Now, I'm drinking more water than I am soda, but I usually drink about a gallon of water a day. Soda, I usually drink a liter a day. My body did not like going cold turkey on soda, so I still have a little so my body doesn't go batshit crazy. My BP in mid-June was down to 140/110, a much more likable number. Blame that on the end of school, the change in diet, and definitely the Norvasc.

If you are near a Sam's Club or other warehouse store, buy your bottled water there. Until last week when summer school ended, I used to buy a 30-pack of Nestle Pure Life 1/2 liter bottles of water for under $4, with each 30-pack lasting me between a week and a half and 2 weeks. I'd take 4 or 5 with me to work daily (2 to summer school, since it's shorter) along with the occasional Crystal Light orange drink mix, and I'd be set. I've seen 24/30/32-packs of 1/2 liters of water in Wal-Mart and other stores for $5 to $6, a great bargain compared to $3.50 a night on sugar water.
